Call for action to stop drivers clogging up residential streets to avoid Perth parking charges

Residents in the Muirton Bank area of Perth are unhappy that commuters who work in the city centre have been parking outside their homes to avoid paying parking charges.
Residents in the Muirton Bank area of Perth are unhappy that commuters who work in the city centre have been parking outside their homes to avoid paying parking charges.

Commuting Perth motorists could be stopped from parking in parts of a residential area by new traffic restrictions.

Residents in the Muirton Bank area have complained that city centre workers have been parking indiscriminately outside their homes.

Many people leave their car in the residential streets and walk into town to avoid parking charges levied by Perth and Kinross Council.

The North Inch and Muirton Community Council held a meeting between residents and council officials to try to find a solution to the problem.

Some called on the area to be converted into a permit holder zone, which would force those parking in the area while at work in the city to move elsewhere.

While the council has ruled out such a move, they are considering whether to extend the double yellow line system which would reduce the number of spaces available for commuters.

Councillor Peter Barrett, who attended the meeting, said: “There are cars parked across junctions and right up to corners.

“There might be some small changes required to extend or shorten some of the restrictions, but they are intended to deal with the problems that residents are experiencing daily.”

He called on the council to review parking charges in order to encourage more people to park in the city centre.

“There is a review into parking in the city centre and the council needs to demonstrate that it will get to grips with the issues and concerns that local residents are raising quickly,” he said.

“On-street parking on Edinburgh Road lies virtually empty all day whilst the station car park which charges £3 is jam-packed.

“£3.50 a day for parking on the South Inch is clearly flawed and the council needs to trial lower daily charges, say £2 or £2.50 a day, to test the market. It might even generate more income.

“It is time for the council to introduce sensible changes and show that it can respond quickly to local residents and businesses’ needs and concerns,” he said.

A council spokeswoman said: “Following concerns raised by residents about indiscriminate parking in their local area, we are considering a proposal to reduce parking at the road junctions of Muirton Place, Muirton Bank and Florence Place in Perth in the interest of safety.

“Following feedback from residents at a public consultation meeting held last week by the North Inch and Muirton Community Council, we will now carry out a site visit and explore the possibility of providing further parking restrictions for the area.

“Over the coming months we will carry out a further consultation with local residents.”
