Police hunt vandals after Blairgowrie rampage causes thousands of pounds worth of damage

Police are hunting vandals who went on the rampage in a Perthshire town centre and lobbed a set of traffic lights into a river.

Vandals left a trail of destruction in Blairgowrie at the weekend, causing thousands of pounds worth of damage.

Temporary lights and pedestrian crossing signals were uprooted from the roadside and thrown over the Boat Brae bridge.

Engineers were called to the area on Monday and found two of their devices under the water.

A third light had been moved from its base and broken. A fourth was reported missing.

Perth and Kinross Council said inspectors went to the town to assess the damage and discuss ways of salvaging the lights from the river, possibly using a crane.

The damage was believed to have been caused early on Sunday.

Police have appealed for any witnesses to get in touch.

The lights were put in place by the local authority this summer to improve safety after the Wellmeadow’s unpopular traffic lights were switched off following a two-week trial.

The temporary set-up was due to be removed on Monday morning as part of a four-week project to install new traffic arrangements and permanent signals.

However, the roadworks were shelved after outcry from local businesses, who claimed the work would heavily impact on their Christmas trade.

Resident Craig Lunn spotted the lights in the river and reported it on social media.

He said: “From what I can tell there are two sets of temporary traffic lights in the river.

“They were by the old Methodist church on Boat Brae.

“There was one set of traffic lights and one pedestrian crossing lights.

“There was no sign of the other set.”

It is believed the company responsible for the maintenance of the lights will use waders and winching gear to lift the equipment out of the water.

The town centre traffic lights were turned off after locals complained that they were causing congestion problems.

Anyone with information about vandalism at the weekend is asked to call the police on 101 or freephone Crimestoppers in confidence on 0800 555111.
