An enterprising local authority could make cash by selling advertising space on the side of its bin lorries.
The unusual sponsorship plan is part of a wider “transformation strategy” which considers dozens of entrepreneurial ways to help prepare Perth and Kinross Council for future financial challenges.
Officers are now being asked to consider leasing out adverts on vehicles like bin lorries, as well as other council assets such as bus shelters.
The proposal, one of dozens of strategy suggestions, is expected to make savings of £150,000 over the next four years.
A £40,000 feasibility study, part of the £1.3 million transformation plan, was approved by councillors this week.
Head of strategic commissioning Keith Macnamarra said: “Probably the best example of asset sponsorship, which you see often, is advertising on roundabouts. Several local authorities are already doing that.
“But this is something that can be broadened out to things such as advertising on the side of bin lorries. We think there’s quite a wide area of this kind of sponsorship that could be looked into.”
Council leader Ian Millar said the authority’s transformation programme, a series of more than 40 reviews, took a “proactive approach to public service reform”.
A similar scheme has already been adopted by council chiefs in Edinburgh and some other regions across the UK.
