Medieval spectacle at Perth Racecourse not joust for fun

Visitors to Perth Racecourse on Saturday will be transported back in time as the venue hosts a race day specially designed to mark the town’s 800th birthday.

The Perth 800 event offers a “fun-filled” line-up of entertainment harking back to the year 1210. Included will be a re-enactment of King William I presenting the royal charter to Perth, adrenaline-fuelled medieval jousting performances and entertainment from the Kings Jesters. There will also be falconry demonstrations, horse and carriage rides and a vintage vehicle show.

General manager at Perth Racecourse Sam Morshead said, “Visitors will be transported to a beautiful and beguiling bygone era for the day.

“Spirits are high here at the racecourse. With such a wide range of activities on offer this weekend’s event will appeal to many visitors, both young and old and from near and far, and will undoubtedly attract a large crowd.”

The Perth 800 event represents the first Saturday fixture at the venue in seven years.

“A Saturday fixture is not easy to come by,” Mr Morshead said. “To have been granted this by the British Horseracing Authority is a real feat. In previous years when Perth Racecourse hosted a Saturday fixture in August it was historically our most valuable fixture.

“Perth Racecourse has again applied for the corresponding day next year for another charity-led event and I am very hopeful we will be successful.”

Meanwhile visitors are being challenged to dress in medieval costume for the day, with a prize for the most appropriately dressed 13th century racegoer. Prizes will be awarded to the best male, best female, best child and best family.

The Perth 800 race day will be supporting local charity the Balcraig Foundation and its projects in Kenya which help 1700 children.
