A review of the way Scottish universities are run must take account of the “turmoil” at Abertay University, MSP Jenny Marra said.

Ministers have asked Professor Ferdinand von Prondzynski, of Robert Gordon University, to chair the review, looking at democratic accountability and the effectiveness of management.

In light of the dispute at Abertay over the forced retirement of principal Professor Bernard King, arrangements for appointing principals and members of university courts will also be on the agenda.

Ms Marra said she had been in touch with Prof von Prondzynski.

“I have raised with him my concerns over the situation at the top of Abertay University.

“I have asked the professor to make recommendations in his review so that this kind of turmoil in governance and the uncertainty that follows it should not be repeated in any Scottish university.

“Uncertainty at the top of a university is not good for staff, students or the city, but I am confident that Abertay will come through this.

“Abertay is a great university with an enviable track record in cutting-edge education and training.

“I know the staff will steer Abertay through this period to a stronger position for the future.”

The Labour MSP said she understood Abertay had decided to conduct its own investigation into governance in the university once the situation had settled down.

“I think this is a clear indication that there is commitment in the institution to resolving difficulties and preventing this happening again,” she said.
