Maverick detective John Rebus is set for his 20th outing later this year as author Ian Rankin announced a return from a year-long break.
The best-selling crime writer took a sabbatical to relax and travel in 2014 but has revealed plans for the latest instalment of his hit character, in a novel called Even Dogs In The Wild.
Publishers Orion announced the book will be released in autumn this year and will bring together the author’s biggest characters, including Detective Inspector Siobhan Clarke and local gangster Ger Cafferty.
Edinburgh native Rebus, who began life in 1987 and has been adapted for the small screen, is recently retired but gets the call from his old colleague after the death of a senior lawyer in a robbery, the publisher revealed.
Fife-born Rankin was recently elected along with a host of scientists, prominent academics and names from the arts world to become fellows of the Royal Society of Edinburgh (RSE).
The 54-year-old’s books have been translated into 36 languages and won numerous crime-writing awards.
