Organisations and businesses are making contingency plans after it was announced the Forth Road Bridge will be closed until the new year.

The unprecedented closure has shut down the most direct route for vehicles travelling from Edinburgh to and from Fife and beyond.

NHS Fife has set up a hospital control team, which will meet twice a day, to monitor any impact of the closure on its services.

“Any potential effect on patients and staff is currently being assessed and we are exploring the provision of accommodation and transport, where necessary, to ensure we continue to provide high-quality care,” the health board said.

NHS Tayside said: “We will continue to work closely with our neighbouring health boards, the Scottish Ambulance Service and Scottish Government with a view to mitigating any potential disruption to our services.”

It said arrangements are being made to maintain patient transport services.

NHS Lothian said it is also monitoring and evaluating the impact the closure is having on its services.

“Patients are advised that NHS Lothian services are running as normal and those travelling into Lothian should allow extra time for their journey,” the health board said.
