Author Tracy Warren sets up dyslexia website

A Fife author who was diagnosed with dyslexia at the age of 22 has set up a website aimed at inspiring children who also suffer from the condition.

Tracy Warren’s Porkie Pie books centre on a group of teenage friends, one of whom discovers she has dyslexia, and shows the struggles she faces at school and the obstacles she manages to overcome.

Tracy created the website specifically for youngsters who have dyslexia to give them the chance to speak to other children who have it.

She also hopes the site will help educate people about the condition and dispel any myths about it.

“Until I was diagnosed as dyslexic I thought there was something wrong with me… and went through all my school years feeling like I was the only person who was this daft,” Tracy said.

“Once I was told I was dyslexic, however, and shown different ways to overcome it, I then knew the world was my oyster and I could achieve anything I wanted to.

“It wasn’t easy, but then things in life that are worthwhile normally aren’t, and there was no way I was going to let a little word like dyslexia stop me achieving my dream.

“I’ve visited many schools and seen so many children who feel the same way I did and I hope in some small way my books and talks will reach out to them and show them they are not alone.

“The fact is one in every 10 of us have dyslexia so it’s more common than people realise and nothing to be ashamed of.”

Tracy is now completing her third Porkie Pie book, poetry picture books for younger children and has also been approached to write scripts for a Porkie Pie TV series.
