The Scottish Government will stand “shoulder to shoulder” with the people of Fife following the controversial decision to axe RAF Leuchars, finance secretary John Swinney has pledged.
With the army set to take over the base, he promised to do all in his power to ensure a “quick transition” and to press for extra community funding for the beleaguered region.
Mr Swinney spoke out after a meeting with community representatives and local politicians on Wednesday.
On Monday, Defence Secretary Liam Fox announced plans to end the RAF’s long association with Leuchars. The base will instead become the headquarters for a multi-role army brigade.
There remains huge uncertainty over the proposals and Mr Swinney is keen to make sure the Westminster Government “lives up to its responsibilities.”
He said, “The UK Government’s decision to withdraw the RAF from Leuchars is greatly disappointing to the Scottish Government and the local community. Working with the community, we made the strong case for the retention of RAF Leuchars, and we continue to stand shoulder to shoulder with all communities affected by the outcomes of Westminster’s defence basing review.
“The Scottish Government will be pressing the UK Government strongly to live up to their responsibilities and engage with as well as provide extra funding to the individuals, businesses and communities affected by their announcement.”
He said the promised transition to an army base should be, “as smooth and as quick as possible” and added, “It must also have the minimum impact on the local community and economy.”
