Fife and Tayside spared for now but severe weather warning sees gritters standing by

Courier country escaped the worst of yesterday’s wintry blast, which resulted in travel problems across Scotland.

A minor accident near Kirkcaldy in Fife caused some inconvenience for drivers on the A92 but it was quickly cleared.

During the day on Tuesday, Fife, Angus, Dundee and Perthshire witnessed just a few flakes of snow, which did not lie, mixed with rain showers.

Early snowfall caused some problems in Angus, with the most treacherous stretch being on the A90 towards Laurencekirk.

The Brechin to Forfar road was also badly affected near Aberlemno and a plough was called in to clear the road for commuters.

Courier country is set to be hit by plunging temperatures and snow today and tomorrow, with the Met Office issuing a severe weather warning for Central, Tayside and Fife.

The early hours of Thursday morning are likely to see the lowest temperatures, with the mercury sliding as low as -11 in Angus.

Councils have increased the amount of salt spread on major routes, following the first flurry of snow on Monday.

A spokeswoman for Angus Council said: ”During a severe weather spell we’ll use approximately 400 tonnes of salt per day on our roads and pavements.

”We’ll have our gritters out from early tomorrow morning treating the network according to priority, with the busiest routes done first and for longer periods.”

Fife Council was also prepared for the freezing conditions.

Bill Liddle, service manager (maintenance operations), said: ”We are planning ahead for the cold snap and a fleet of gritters are standing by to spread in excess of 250 tonnes of salt on the kingdom’s roads overnight.”

Perth and Kinross Council said they used 500 tonnes of grit on Tuesday and planned to use the same amount on Wednesday.

Dundee Council has provided an interactive map on their website which shows major gritting routes and the locations of grit bins throughout the city.

A Met Office spokesman warned: ”Outbreaks of rain and sleet will be clearing southwards on Tuesday night and early Wednesday, leaving surfaces wet and prone to freezing as skies clear and temperatures fall.

”There is also a chance that precipitation could turn to snow locally, most likely over hills, where a slight cover is possible locally.

”The public should be aware of the potential for increased iciness, especially early on Wednesday, and possible disruption to travel.

”After a frosty night with icy patches, a spell of wet weather will affect the UK on Thursday.

”Over Scotland and northern England snow is expected over higher ground, where 5-10cm is likely above 300 metres.

”At lower levels, away from western coastal areas, the wet weather is expected to be preceded by some sleet and snow either during the early hours or during Thursday morning.”
