Publican Steve Barbieri

Dundee ice-cream maker and publican Steve Barbieri has died after a short illness.

Born in Union Street in 1923 the youngest of five children, Mr Barbieri attended Harris junior school and Dundee High School before joining the navy in 1942.

He signed up to the Fleet Air Arm and spent his war years in America, Newfoundland and Trinidad.

When he demobbed in 1945 he worked in his father Stefano’s ice-cream parlour, the Washington Soda Fountain, in the Nethergate.

He married his first wife Dorothy Wallis in 1946 and the couple had two sons, Stephen and David.

After Dorothy died, he married Barbara Gove in 1968 but they had no children.

When his father died, Mr Barbieri took over the business and set up The Chrome cafe in Union Street. He then opened a pub and restaurant, the Chrome Rail, in Seagate.

He sold the premises to Marks & Spencer and retired in 1982, aged 59.

Barbara died in 1988 and Mr Barbieri started going to bridge classes where he met his third wife, Daphne, in 1991.

Mr Barbieri spent his retirement shooting and fishing, and he was an active member of Abertay Probus.

He is survived by Daphne, sons Stephen and David, Daphne’s sons Stewart and Simon and six grandchildren.
