Frances O’Brien, the former head of children’s entertainment at DC Thomson & Co Ltd, has died aged 62.

Mrs O’Brien joined the company as an art department trainee and worked for the company until her retirement in 2010.

She played a key role in launching the DC Thomson children’s magazine Animals and You.

Her husband Ken said: “She loved her job. She retired early so that we could spend more time together.

“She lived a full, enjoyable life with many friends and relished their company.”

Mrs O’Brien spent time outside work running marathons and hill running in the Lomonds, and had a love of walking.

The longest walk she undertook was the Robert Louis Stevenson Trail in France.

She was also a keen traveller and just a few months before her death she went on a four-week trip around Europe, taking in France, Germany, Switzerland and Italy.

Her other hobbies included sailing and salmon fishing on Harris whenever she could.

Squash was also one of her passions and she became a champion in Perth.

While she enjoyed cooking, she and her husband also loved to visit Michelin star restaurants throughout Scotland.

She collected wild mushrooms and garlic by foraging in the forests of Perthshire, near where she lived.

Mrs O’Brien is survived by her husband, two sons, Martin and Christopher, four grandchildren, Lisa, Samantha, Cameron and Michael, and three sisters, Pat, Sheila and Moira.
