Former Scout leader and keen photographer John Stewart

Today’s letters to The Courier.

Former Barnhill Scout leader and well-known photographer John Stewart has passed away at the age of 73.

Mr Stewart had suffered from chronic bronchitis and asthma all his life and succumbed to the illness on Tuesday after a short stay in Roxburghe House.

Born in Aberdeen in 1938 he attended Walker Road school before moving to Edinburgh. He then came to Dundee to work at Bett Brothers.

Mr Stewart met wife Kathleen at the jazz club in Aberdeen and the couple were married in 1964. They had two sons, Alan and Craig.

Mr Stewart went on to work as an architectural assistant for Angus Council for over 20 years.

He was the group Scout leader for the 49th Broughty Ferry Scout group and was a keen hillwalker, cyclist and skier. He had a lifelong interest in photography and was past president of both the Dundee Photographic Society and the Carnoustie Camera Club.

Mr Stewart was honoured by the Scottish Salon of Photography with a gold and silver medal and he and Kathleen were flown to Madrid in 2006 to collect a prize in photography from the Spanish Railways.

For the past five years he was chairman of the Dundee branch of the British Lung Foundation, Breathe Easy.

Mr Stewart is survived by Kathleen, sons Alan and Craig, daughter-in-laws Pauline and Susan and grandchildren Rhona, Neil, Amy and Emma.
