Winger Steven Robb to play for Thai Port not Tayport

Former Dundee and Dundee United winger Steven Robb will jet out to Bangkok on Friday to sign a two-year contract with Thai Port.

Robb revealed before heading to the airport that he has already had to deflect cheeky suggestions that he is actually only going to the juniors with Tayport.

The 28-year-old has been on the lookout for a new club after leaving St Mirren a fortnight ago and has now accepted an offer to move thousands of miles across the world.

However, when he went to visit his bank the other day, the teller thought he was moving much closer to home.

“I was in the bank in Dundee and got speaking to the guy behind the counter,” said Robb, who turned out as a trialist for the Dark Blues against Ross County on January 2.

“He was asking me what I was doing and I told him I was going to sign for a club called Thai Port.

“He just looked a bit blank and then asked if it was the junior club across the water.

“He obviously thought I said I was going to Tayport, so I had to explain to him it wasn’t and that I was moving to Thailand.”

He added, “A few other folk have been winding me up saying, ‘Are you sure it isn’t Tayport you are going to?’ as well.

“Not many people have heard of the club, but it is a brilliant opportunity for me and I am so excited about it.”‘I cannot wait’Robb said, “I leave on Friday and arrive in Bangkok on Saturday afternoon.

“It’s very exciting and I cannot wait to get started.”

He was able to pick up some local information on Bangkok from his cousin Lisa, who already lives there.

He said, “Lisa’s husband works in the oil industry and has been posted there for the next three years.

“So they will be there for the whole time of my contract.

“I have asked them about a million questions and it’s ideal to have someone I know there to help me settle in.

“My wife Jacklyn and son Owen are not coming out until March, but it will be great for them to have people we know.”

He added, “It’s a fantastic opportunity and it came about by a fluke, to be honest. I was speaking to Neil Jablonski, who used to play with Dundee and is now in Australia, and was telling him that I fancied going abroad to play.

“He mentioned it to his coach in Australia and it so happens his brother, Nathan Hall, is the assistant manager of the team in Thailand so it just developed from there.

“It is pre-season there just now, but I cannot wait to fly out and get started.”
