Raith manager happy with current squad

Raith Rovers manager Grant Murray says he would be content to see out the rest of the season with the squad he currently has at his disposal.

The Stark’s Park boss has not ruled out making any signings in the final fortnight of the January transfer window, but Murray maintains there is no immediate need to bring in reinforcements just for the sake of it.

After a difficult period where wins were hard to come by, Rovers seem to have steadied the ship with back-to-back away victories.

And while new faces may or may not be added to his team this month, the Raith boss has faith in the players presently at the club as they prepare for tomorrow’s home game against Dumbarton.

“At the end of the day if I was allowed to bring 10 players in I would bring 10 players in,” he commented.

“You don’t stop looking at players, but this is the squad of players we’ve got, this is the squad of players who have won the last two games and this is the squad of players I’m going into the weekend with.

“If January closes and this is the squad of players we’ve got, then so be it.

“If there’s a player out there that I felt would improve the squad then it’s up to me to go to the board.

“The board can then say yes or no.

“There might be players out there who are available but they’ve got to be value for money.

“It’s like going for a car if you give someone a budget they’ll find you a car no bother.

“At the end of the day, Premiership clubs and other clubs in January look to get players out on loan but they’ve got to be right for my squad, not just our league.

“They’ve got to make the squad better.”

Murray has the luxury of a full squad to choose from for the first time this season ahead of tomorrow’s match, with goalkeeper Kevin Cuthbert now back in training after his shoulder injury and set to push David McGurn for a starting slot.

Several members of the squad were affected by a sickness bug last week, but the postponement of Saturday’s home game against Queen of the South has ensured a clean bill of health ahead of this weekend.

“We’ve still got Friday to go mind, but so far everyone’s played or trained,” Murray explained yesterday.

“I think the last time we had that was the first day of pre-season, so it’s great.

“Kevin’s been back involved doing training and he’s been involved in bounce games.

“Last week’s one probably wasn’t ideal because it ended up being on astroturf and we had tried to get it on grass, but it was 90 minutes for him and he was involved in the one we had on Tuesday as well.”

As Murray alluded to, Rovers kept themselves ticking over with a bounce game against ironically Queen of the South at Clyde’s Broadwood Stadium on Tuesday.

Kevin Moon scored the only goal of the game as Raith ran out winners, and Murray reckoned it was a worthwhile exercise.

He concluded: “It was mainly for the guys who needed a bit of game time and it was good, considering the weather.

“After the game I said to James Fowler that we should have just made it a league game!

“But at this time of the year it’s always hard to get games, so it was good for both parties to play football on a good surface.”
