East Fife 2 Clyde 0: Naysmith hails attacking power

East Fife boss Gary Naysmith hailed his players after their fourth win on the bounce.

Second-half goals from Jamie Insall and Kyle Wilkie were enough to down Clyde and put the Methil men second in League Two.

Naysmith said: “This is as strong as the squad has been, attacking-wise.

“You look around and we still have Kevin Smith, Jordan Austin and Ali Coote there on the bench if things aren’t going our way.

“The lads are playing with confidence. Looking at it, because they see the players sitting on the bench, they know that if they’re not doing the business someone will come in and take their jersey.

“I’ve said to the players that if they are doing it then they’ll stay in and 10 of the 11 have been playing the last few games.”

Saturday’s game was subject to an inspection early in the morning. While Bayview’s surface was more than playable, there was a strong, swirling wind which could have put the game in doubt.

It ended up being given the green light, however, and it was the Fifers who handled the conditions better.

Clyde didn’t make the most of having the wind at their backs during the opening 45.

Nathan Austin went close for the Methil men, with Scott Linton and David Marsh testing Liam Kelly at the other end.

The sides went in level at the break, with the home side knowing they would have the advantage of the wind in the second half.

It didn’t take them long to put the advantage to good use.

Austin skinned his marker before cutting in and squaring along the face of the goal.

Strike partner Insall was waiting and he fired high into the roof of the net.

It was almost 2-0 just a couple of minutes later when a slick move forward saw Austin turn creator again, this time for Wilkie, who couldn’t get his shot on target.

But Wilkie wasn’t to be denied and wrapped up the win when he picked up a Ross Brown pass and sidefooted home.

Clyde pressed forward in the hope of getting back into the game but found the East Fife defence in no mood to give up their clean sheet.
