Montrose manager Stuart Garden could not disguise his delight as his side climbed into the top four of League Two with an emphatic victory over leaders East Stirling.
Montrose might have been in front after two minutes when Bryan Deasley was in on goal, but shot at keeper Grant Hay.
The deadlock was broken in 34 minutes. A drive from Garry Wood was parried by Hay, but the ball broke off Michael McGowan and sneaked over the line for an own goal.
Montrose were worth their lead, and on the half-time whistle Paul Watson just missed the target with a screamer from 25 yards.
The home side made it 2-0 in 51 minutes when Terry Masson controlled a clearance and drilled home a left-foot drive.
The Montrose defence held out well against anything East Stirling could throw at them, although Kevin Turner and Chris Townsley both had efforts which went just wide.
Garden said: “That was a good win for us. We lost last week and we managed to bounce back really well. Ever since the Albion Rovers game we have been on a good run and that was another clean sheet.
“We have already had more clean sheets than we did in the whole of last season.”
Montrose could go top of the league if they beat Queen’s Park tomorrow, but Garden remains cautious.
“I know Gardner Speirs well and he will have Queen’s well organised,” he said.
“Although East Stirling had some late pressure with crosses into our box, our keeper came for them well and our centre-halves were able to head the ball away.”
The Montrose boss is not getting carried away, but says the league title is his side’s ultimate aim.
“We want to set our target high and, with the group of players we have, we will be in with a shout.”
