As fans across the planet gear up for the World Cup, a Fife fan has been given a good laugh after ordering the new Scotland kit a free England flag and mug.

The Kirkcaldy supporter, who did not wish to be named, contacted The Courier after receiving his order this week from online sports company Sports Direct.

He said, “I had a really good chuckle to myself when it came in I know there must be standard procedure but surely there must be some way of checking at dispatch?

“I took it in good faith but some other people might not.”

Scotland fans will have to be content with watching the World Cup on TV, while England start their campaign against the USA on Saturday.

The fan added he will donate the flag and mug to charity.

Meanwhile, a Scot has spent thousands of pounds to fly to the World Cup to cheer on England.

Billy Porter, from Dundee, has forked out for flights, hotel accommodation and tickets for two of England’s group games.

The postman, who now lives in Swindon, Wiltshire, defended himself after switching allegiance to support the Auld Enemy despite the tradition of Scots cheering on England’s opponents.

Mr Porter (57) said, “None of the other three home nations made it and I wanted to go to the World Cup.

“I like football and I think it will be an exciting time in South Africa.

“They are very passionate about football.”

Mr Porter, who flew out from Heathrow to cheer on Fabio Capello’s side, dismissed safety fears about South Africa.

He said, “I just won’t walk about flashing any valuables.

“You always get a few rogues no matter where you are.”

A survey this week showed 76% of Scots do not support England.

And a Glasgow-bound delivery of 1000 fake Algeria shirts the strip of England’s second group opponents has been stopped by customs officers at East Midlands Airport.
