Hibs stopper asked to keep Dundee in SPL survival hunt

Dundee keeper Steve Simonsen has called on his friend Ben Williams to do the Dark Blues a massive favour this weekend.

Having crossed paths with the Hibs No 1 from his time down south, Simonsen hopes Williams can keep relegation rivals St Mirren at bay when they visit Easter Road on Saturday in a match that will have a huge bearing on Dundee’s survival hopes.

Dundee entertain Hearts this weekend knowing that only a win will preserve their SPL status, but anything the Dark Blues achieve might prove to be academic if the Buddies beat Hibs to consign Dundee to the drop.

“I know Ben from our time down south,” Simonsen revealed.

“I came across him a few times and obviously I’d like to see him do us a turn come Saturday. He was a very highly-rated at Man United and now seems to be doing a good job for Hibs.

“Of course, it would be great if he could keep a clean sheet against St Mirren and then I’d be able to give him a pat on the back when we play them in the near future.”

Dundee’s dramatic win at St Mirren last weekend means their survival fight goes on, and Simonsen insists morale in the Dens camp is high.

He added: “The spirit is brilliant. Results obviously help and we’re treating every game as though it’s a cup final.

“We’ve four games left and that’s how we have to approach them and then we have to rely on others to slip up. We’ll just concentrate on ourselves first and foremost and try to make sure we get the right result against Hearts.”

Simonsen starred for the Dark Blues in the win over St Mirren and the ex-Everton and Stoke City star admits he’s loving the pressure of their basement battle.

“I’m really enjoying my football,” he added.

“We’ve all really responded since John Brown took over and we know we have to keep on producing. I’m surprised where we are in terms of the league when you look at how well we’ve done recently.

“We’ve got a determined group of players and the most important thing is that we’re not giving up on anything.”
