Dundee United 2 Celtic 1: Tangerines hang on for long-awaited win

Dundee United secured their first win over Celtic in two and a half years thanks to goals from Nadir Ciftci and Stuart Armstrong at Tannadice.

It was back on May 6, 2012 that the Tangerines enjoyed another beautiful Sunday, with a header from Scott Robertson securing a rare success over the Hoops.

This time United’s victory came courtesy of Ciftci’s shot on the turn on just four minutes after he was found by an Amstrong deflected pass, then the Turk repaid the compliment when he played a superb chip to the back post for Armstrong to nod home after 65 minutes.

Hoops sub – and former Dundee frontman – Leigh Griffiths grabbed one back for the visitors with just three minutes of the 90 remaining and then hit the post with a low drive in injury-time.

The hosts had already ridden their luck by then as the champions had a decent penalty shout turned down when Sean Dillon appeared to clash with John Guidetti inside the box and also had a goal for sub Stefan Scepovic wrongly ruled out for offside.

However, given the hard-luck stories United have had to tell over the years in games against Celtic, maybe they were due a break in this fixture and the saw out the closing moments in professional style down at the corner flag in front of the tunnel.

The victory pushed the Tangerines up from fifth spot to second place in the Premiership table and they now sit only four behind Celtic going into Saturday’s trip to Perth to play St Johnstone.
