He has played at the highest level in England as well as for his country 19 times, but Callum Davidson says winning the Scottish Cup as assistant manager at St Johnstone is the highlight of his career.

The former Saints full-back was appointed Tommy Wright’s right-hand man when the Northern Irishman took over from Steve Lomas at McDiarmid Park.

It has been an incredible first season in charge for both of them with the crowning glory coming at Celtic Park on Saturday as St Johnstone overcame favourites Dundee United to secure the first major silverware in the club’s history.

That achievement is something Davidson admits will stay with him forever.

He said: “It’s been magic but I was in a bit of a daze for the last five minutes of the game and it’s been the same for a couple of days now due to the alcohol!

“What a great achievement and to be part of it is special.

“Nothing in my career comes close, this is the highlight and it probably will be because I don’t think I’ll get to another club and help win the first trophy in their history.

“I started and finished my playing career at McDiarmid Park and moved into management, so it’s the best achievement of my career.

“It’s great for me to give something back for what St Johnstone has done for me. I’ve loved my role this season and I couldn’t have hoped for anything better than winning the Scottish Cup.”
