St Johnstone star Murray Davidson considers options

St Johnstone midfielder Murray Davidson will weigh up his options over the coming weeks after learning that the Perth club plan to offer him a new deal.

The 25-year-old, who looked set to leave McDiarmid Park in the summer, re-joined Saints at the start of the season on a one-year contract and has played his way back into a regular starting role, although his performances will no doubt have a number of clubs sniffing around the playmaker when his current deal expires.

With that in mind, Saints are keen to sit down with Davidson and his agent to try and keep him at the club, and the player himself has revealed that the process has already begun.

“My contract is up in the summer and the club have spoken to my agent,” he told Courier Sport.

“I think the gaffer and my agent sat down so where it stands at the moment, I’m not too sure. Football is football.

“You’ve got to make a decision on what you feel is right for yourself. At the moment St Johnstone have said they want to offer me a new contract so when I sit down with my agent we’ll see what feels best for me.”

Like last summer, Davidson is understood to have a few options on the table but will take the time to decide what is right for him before putting pen to paper on any contract.

However, he is certainly enjoying life at McDiarmid Park in the heart of a midfield where competition for places has never been more fierce.

“It is the strongest since I’ve been here in terms of numbers but that can only be good,” he continued.

“You look at the defence and Sanel (Jahic) did brilliantly when he was here but obviously he’s now moved on because we’re so strong in defence.

“It’s like that across the whole team, taking away the front where we’re the complete opposite at the moment because we’ve only really got two fully fit strikers.

“But you’d much rather have competition that not, so it can only be good for the team to have competition in these areas.”

Indeed, Davidson was delighted to see two of his midfield team-mates, Gary McDonald and Scott Brown, commit themselves to the club this week by signing contract extensions.

“I think they are thoroughly deserved,” Davidson commented.

“Gary came in in the summer and played a lot of games and did well, so it’s obviously deserved. It’s always good to get a wee bit security and it will suit both club and player.

“And obviously Broony has not played as much as he could have liked but he’s younger and it’s completely different for him.

“He’s impressed since he came into training and played well in the Under 20s games, started against Motherwell, so it’s great news for both players and club.

“I think Scott has got a great future ahead of him he’s a quiet lad but he is getting a wee bit louder which you need to be.

“He’s got ability and he’s done great since he came in.

“It’s probably unfortunate for him that midfield is one of our strongest areas but if he keeps going the way he is I’m sure he’ll have a bright future.”
