Tightest season St Johnstone boss has known

Tommy Wright has never known a knife-edge season like this one.

The Perth boss believes that as many as seven teams have got a shot at a Premiership top six place.

A point was enough at the weekend to take Saints up a place from fifth to fourth so a win against Partick Thistle tomorrow night would be even more significant.

Wright said: “It’s a crazy situation with how tight the league is at the moment.

“It’s exciting but I’d rather be six points better off and seeing the excitement elsewhere.

“I don’t think I’ve seen anything like it. It’s always been tight in terms of top six but this year there is so little between the sides from fourth to 11th.

“Usually the teams in 10th, 11th and 12 are battling it out and there’s maybe 15 points to the rest.

“Not this time – there’s only eight. We’ve got to look up and it’s still in our hands.

“Everyone is capable.

“It’s hard to say what would get you top six – maybe 42 points – but you could argue right down to Kilmarnock could get in.

“You could make a case for every team.

“We’ll concentrate on ourselves. I was pleased on Saturday with the character. There’s been a lot of negativity – not from us – but around the club.

“Fair play to the players for getting on with their jobs and getting us in to a healthy position.”

He added: “Given the run we were on, it was forgotten about we are still fourth in the league.

“We’ll remain positive because at this stage every point is vital. The side are all playing against each other and if you can string some wins together it can cement your top six place.

“It gets more difficult every year. Most of the other teams strengthened. We still have a very good squad but we would have liked to have done more in January but the circumstances didn’t allow us.

“Every year we get top six is a tremendous achievement so if you keep doing it then each season is every bit as good as what’s happened previously.”

Thistle are familiar opponents for Saints, as the sides faced each other just a week ago.

“The way the fixtures have worked out means we face them again,” Wright said.

“We watched them again at the weekend but we’ll obviously know all about them.

“That’s the down side of playing sides three or four times – you get to know each other.

“It’ll be fresh in their minds but we’ll be looking for a better result this time.

“They’ve beaten us twice but I don’t like talking about revenge or anything. It’s wrong if that needs to motivate you.

“It’s the need for three points and trying to get a bit of a gap on the teams below us.”

Wright will be hoping that only having the league to focus on for the rest of the season will be a positive for the Perth men.

“We’d rather still be in the cups but it can be a advantage when you don’t have to play so much,” he said.

“We have the next three Wednesdays with weeks in between so there’s plenty of time to recover.”

Unsurprisingly, Wright was delighted with the point and performance at Pittodrie.

“I thought we looked good first half,” he reflected. “We caused them a few problems and had more clear cut chances.

“Overall it pleased me. We defended well as a team unit and stayed in the game.”

Murray Davidson should return but Brian Easton and Chris Millar will probably have to wait for another week before being available for selection.
