St Johnstone boss Tommy Wright proud of players despite defeat

Tommy Wright reacts after another Saints chance is missed.

St Johnstone manager Tommy Wright insisted he was proud of his players despite losing 3-0 to Celtic.

Saints saw their seven-game unbeaten run come to an end at McDiarmid Park yesterday but Wright praised his team for creating some superb chances.

However, he was unhappy to concede two goals to corners.

Those were scored by first Nadir Ciftci on 35 minutes then Dedryck Boyata grabbed the second four minutes after the break.

Ciftci added a third midway through the second half and that was that.

Wright said: “It’s hard to take but we can only look at ourselves.

“There was some good goalkeeping but we could have been more ruthless in front of goal.

“We ended up losing the game because we gave away two goals from corners.

“OK, they were good deliveries (from Callum McGregor) but the second one, in particular, we should have dealt with better.

“So I am disappointed for the players.

“However, I am not disappointed with the overall performance because I thought it was excellent.

“We looked the team with more of a cutting edge from open play for long periods.

“We created numerous opportunities but didn’t take them.

“It’s easy for them (Celtic) at 3-0 to open us up more but I was really proud of the players for the display they put in.”

Saints lost key midfielder Chris Millar to a hamstring injury just a minute before Ciftci opened the scoring.

However, Wright didn’t connect the two events, saying: “That wasn’t significant in terms of losing the goal.

“I don’t think Chris going off affected how we played because we created chances after that.”

Celtic boss Ronny Deila, meanwhile, was delighted with the win.

“It is very good for us because St Johnstone are a very good football team one of the best in Scotland,” he said.

“They have been on a good run of games.

“But we have come back from a European game just two and a half days ago and we have won three-zero.

“You can’t expect more than that.”
