St Johnstone coach surprised by lack of interest in Murray Davidson

Nobody from England has sounded out the St Johnstone management about midfielder Murray Davidson, much to first team coach Tommy Wright’s surprise.

Wright expected to be taking calls from down south about the soon to be out of contract midfielder, but that hasn’t happened.

As it stands, former Perth boss Derek McInnes is the only manager to show his hand.

Wright explained: “If someone was to phone Steve or I about Murray we’d give him a glowing reference.

“We’ve loved working with him and he’s been great for us. We haven’t taken calls from down south, I’m surprised about that.

“The only one we’ve taken has been from Derek McInnes, who told Steve about his interest in him. Our offer to Murray is still on the table. The chairman and Roddy Grant do the contracts but I believe the offer is still there.”

Wright was full of praise for both Davidson and Liam Craig.

One of them (Craig) is definitely leaving and the other (Davidson) is 99% certain to be joining him through the McDiarmid Park exit door.

You wouldn’t know it from their wholehearted commitment to the Perth cause though.

“Murray and Liam have been magnificent for us,” Wright pointed out. Murray has played through injuries but we’ve patched him up and got him on the pitch.”

Wright added: “We thought his season might be over just a few weeks ago and that he might need an operation. But he shows an incredible courage to go out and play.

“I can’t speak highly enough of him, and his team-mates think the world of him as well. We have to pull Murray back at times for his own good. But that’s a good thing to have to do.”

He went on: “Liam as well, he knows he’s leaving at the end of the season. The best thing he did was make his decision because around the time when he was thinking about it his form was a bit iffy.

“But since he decided what he was doing he’s been magnificent. The pair of them have been brilliant for us. Sometimes it happens that people down tools when they know they’re going. But that certainly hasn’t been the case here.”
