Matt Ryan: important goals in both games against Capitals.
Matt Ryan ended the possibility of a comeback with an empty net goal 55 seconds from time to earn Dundee Stars a 6-4 victory over Edinburgh Capitals in ice hockey’s Challenge Cup Group A.
The Tayside club’s Canadian-born assistant player/coach helped ease nerves and complete a four-point weekend with back-to-back wins over the Murrayfield men following Saturday’s 3-2 road victory.
It was Ryan, a former Nottingham Panthers star, who netted the game-winner in the capital, the goal coming with 17 minutes left.
American forward John Mitchell was also influential last night with a treble in a game which Stars led 5-2 after 31 minutes.
The home side’s fans were made to sweat as Capitals pulled two goals back before Ryan’s timely intervention after the Edinburgh club gambled by pulling their netminder to have six skaters.
Dundee’s other marksmen were Brad Plumpton and Chris Blight while former National Hockey League draft pick Riley Emmerson and emerging local talent, Jay King, both netted twice for the visitors.
