Teenage Angus sensation Sandy Mitchell has rounded off a sparkling first season in racing cars.

On the same weekend fellow Scot Gordon Shedden wrapped up his second British Touring Car Championship in a thrilling Brands Hatch finale, 15-year-old Mitchell capped his involvement in the inaugural MSA Formula support series with a string of strong drives.

Placings of second, sixth and ninth in the final three Brands rounds of the 30-race campaign saw the Dundee High School youngster take seventh overall in the new series, which attracted the cream of young drivers from across the globe, and he was delighted to finish the second-highest-placed rookie in the championship.

In all, Sandy, from Letham, scored five overall podiums and visited the rookie podium no fewer than 15 times, an impressive strike rate for the 2014 British Super One Series junior karting champion who made the step up into the single-seater category which gave 15-year-olds the chance to race cars in an officially certified category for the first time.

Sandy’s season highlight was a double win at the ultra-fast Thruxton circuit in his Ford EcoBoost-powered TRS Arden-prepared racer.

A dominant weekend at the Hampshire circuit saw him drive into Scotland’s motorsport record books as the nation’s youngest ever single-seater race winner.
