What should have been the last day of the club league season will turn out to be exciting after all, as Kirkcaldy attempt an escape from relegation to match any from Alcatraz or Colditz.
The Blues are still dependent on Kelso failing to take anything from a Borders derby at Jed-Forest but can concentrate on what they need to do, which is to repeat last week’s devastating display that gave them a chance to wriggle free of relegation to Premier Three at the last gasp.
The 42-5 crushing of Kelso handily wiped out most of the point differential they trailed to the Borderers and they need more of the same against Falkirk on Saturday, against a team that has lost all its games since the league split back in November.
Anything less than a bonus point win, preferably with a landslide advantage of points to boot, will be no good.
Even then, Kelso have to leave Riverside Park with nothing, but Jed are unbeaten for five matches and chances are that local bragging rights will be extra incentive.
Dundee HSFP might get to see the Premier One championship trophy this weekend but sadly for them, in a season that seemed to have chock-full of promise at various times, it will be hosts Melrose who get it if they win at the Greenyards while Glasgow Hawks lose at Hawick.
More likely is that it will be in three weeks when they host Ayr that the title will be confirmed.
The relegation battle in Premier Three continues to change week on week, with now Morgan, who looked reasonably safe three weeks ago, in the midst of it all alongside Dunfermline, who look doomed in bottom place.
With so many games left no side is yet safe. Morgan’s five remaining fixtures are all at home and some of them against teams who have struggled all season on long-distance travels, such as Dumfries and Ardrossan. They start with Howe of Fife, whom they have already beaten at Duffus Park this season.
Perthshire look to have saved themselves with their two bonus point wins in successive weeks, and another against Dalziel at the North Inch will surely complete the job. Dunfie’s cause looks pretty hopeless with only one of their four remaining games at McKane Park and a trip to Dumfries this week.
There should be no finish to Caledonia League One either, with both Strathmore and Hillfoots likely to win their matches against university opposition, but Strathie are still in the box seat with their six-point lead as games run out.
