Erratic drivers dumping their children at busy Angus schools and parking in “shocking” places have sparked a warning from police.

The manner of driving and parking outside Carlogie Primary in Carnoustie prompted Police Scotland to tell parents they must abide by the law.

The Tayside division of the force called on anyone dropping off or picking up their children outside the school to ensure the area is kept safe.

A police spokesman said the warning should serve as a reminder to parents across the entire policing area.

“Police in Angus are asking parents and guardians to be mindful of their actions when taking children to and from school,” said a statement.

“There have been concerns regarding the manner of driving and parking outside Carlogie Primary School in Carnoustie in particular recently.

“If you are driving children to school, please try to leave in plenty time so that you can get parked in a safe place for your children to walk into school.”

Responding to the Facebook appeal, people vented their frustration at the wider issue in Angus.

Kim John posted: “Same at Burnside Primary in Carnoustie. The parking is shocking, parking in the school bus stop and blocking cars in.”

Colin Slane said: “Should go to the primary school Monifieth, the parents there think they are above and beyond the law.

“One parent in a white VW tried to undertake me by mounting the kerb as I waited to pass parked cars idiot.”

According to Police Scotland, winter weather can contribute to poor driving behaviour outside schools.

The spokesman urged parents to plan ahead and take adverse weather conditions into account.

“Outside any school in Tayside there is often the temptation to quickly drop off children at the closest point to the school, especially in winter weather or if it is raining.

“Police officers will continue to monitor the area and provide advice and enforcement where appropriate.”

A spokesman for Angus Council said: “We have received complaints about driver behaviour in and around the school car park at Carlogie Primary recently.

“The school car park should only be used by staff, parents of children with additional support needs, or those who urgently require to collect an unwell child.

“Cones will be placed in the immediate vicinity over the coming weeks to demarcate where it is not suitable to stop or park.

“We appeal to everyone who takes a child to school by car to put child safety first and that means the safety of all children.”
