A Dundee councillor has been suspended by the SNP after allegations he sent a string of hateful messages to a Muslim SNP colleague.

Dundee City Council’s environment convener Craig Melville is reported to have sent texts to an unnamed woman within the party, a day after November’s terror attacks in Paris.

According to the Daily Record, one read: “It’s not personal I just f****** hate your religion and I’ll do all in I’m life do defeat your filth.”

Another is alleged to have said: “And in your favour we live in an uneducated left lift loopy left wing society who is more interested in claiming benefits and being ignorant to the threat of your horrible disease.”

Another messages is said to have referred to the SNP’s international development minister, Humza Yousaf, and condemned Muslim politicians for not doing more to speak out against Islamic extremism.

Contacted by The Courier today, Dundee SNP group chief and city council leader Ken Guild said: “As you know, he has been suspended by party headquarters in Edinburgh.

“Therefore, he is not currently a member of the SNP.”

Mr Melville was unavailable for comment.

A party spokesman said: “The SNP condemns Islamophobia in the strongest possible terms. We will not tolerate it in our party.”

Dundee City Council declined to comment.

Mr Melville aMaryfield councillor and former case worker for SNP deputy leader Stewart Hosie was recently served an “informal adult warning” after allegations of an assault at the city’s SNP parliamentary office.
