Transformation of Ladybank Railway Station to enhance its position as a transport hub is expected to begin next month.
Access to platforms is being improved, a 19th century waiting room restored to provide community meeting facilities and new car parking spaces added.
Children are already helping to create a community garden at the halt. Ladybank Development Trust, which is working on the project with several other bodies, is delighted with the changes afoot.
Spokesman David Croll said: “Work is expected to begin in March on the first phase of these improvements which will see the installation of step-free access ramps and a small amount of additional parking adjacent to the eastern platform.
“In keeping with the historic status of the station, the ramps will be constructed using stone from the old wagon shops which are being demolished as they are beyond economic repair.
“The second phase, refurbishment of the Laird’s Waiting Room, will follow shortly afterwards.
“Ladybank Development Trust, with the assistance of Fife Historic Buildings Trust, will restore the Laird’s Waiting Room to its former glory, at the same time providing the local community with a much needed meeting space.
“Immediately after the upgrading of the Laird’s Waiting Room, which is expected in early autumn, the third phase of the upgrade will commence, including upgrades to pedestrian access and the completion of additional parking adjacent to the eastern platform.”
The trust and Ladybank Primary School are transforming the former stationmaster’s garden into their community garden, which will be named Arthur’s Secret Garden after the last occupant of the stationmaster’s house before it became an art studio.
Pupils have raised money for the establishment of a wildlife pond in the garden by running a weekly cupcake cafe.
