Brazen thieves are breaking in to Kirkcaldy homes as householders go about their business.

Police in Kirkcaldy are warning residents to keep their properties secure following an increase in sneak-in thefts.

Several properties in the town, as well as surrounding communities such as Burntisland, have been targeted, prompting police to urge residents to protect their homes.

Sergeant Jimmy Adamson said: “Many thieves are opportunistic so we are reminding everyone to be vigilant, to ensure that their houses, sheds, garages and cars are secure at all times even if they are in their houses.

“At this time of year folk are looking to spend their hard-earned money on gifts for friends and family members this also coincides with thieves looking to take full advantage of this.

“You never know what others can see by peeking through your windows so please keep your Christmas gifts out of sight.”

The first sneak-in thefts were reported several weeks ago.

Of particular concern to the police is that several incidents occurred while householders were in the property, with the criminals entering via unsecured doors.

Officers are now advising residents to take simple precautions to prevent themselves from being targeted, including leaving on internal lights in the evening, setting house alarms and making sure that external housing lighting is also working properly.

Keeping Christmas presents out of sight and closing curtains before going to bed is also being advised.

Sergeant Adamson added: “Please don’t leave keys in places where potential intruders may be able to find them or reach them, such as under mats or on the inside of door locks.”
