The police watchdog investigating the death of Kirkcaldy man Sheku Bayoh has taken the rare step of appealing to the public for information.

The 31-year-old died in mysterious circumstances while being restrained by police on Sunday morning.

Some witnesses claim Mr Bayoh, originally from Sierra Leone, had been seen waving a knife around before around 15 officers tackled him.

However, friends of the British Gas employee said he had no history of violence.

An independent probe in Mr Bayoh’s death is now being carried out by the Police Investigations and Review Commissioner (PIRC), upon the instruction of the Procurator Fiscal and the Crown Office.

A spokeswoman said they wanted to gather as much information as possible on Sunday’s events.

“Following the death of 31-year-old Sheku Ahmed Tejan Bayoh in Kirkcaldy on May 3 2015, the Police Investigations and Review Commissioner is issuing an appeal to any person who was in Hayfield Road, near to Hendry Road, Kirkcaldy between 7am and 8am on Sunday 3 May 2015,” said a spokeswoman.

“The PIRC is keen to speak to anyone who may have witnessed any incident in this area.

“The PIRC is investigating the circumstances of the death including the man’s contact with police officers prior to his death. The PIRC may be contacted on 01698 542929 or 01698 543291”.
