Spitfire flypast leads VE Day anniversary celebrations in Perthshire
ByRichard Burdge
A flypast over the Tay at Perth by a replica Spitfire on Saturday was one of many reminders in Perth and Kinross of Victory in Europe Day 70 years ago.
In Blairgowrie, Tom McDonald was joined by other drummers as he recreated a march he completed in May 1945 to mark the end of hostilities in Europe.
Mr McDonald repeated the march in 1995 and made his third and final march from the British Legion clubrooms in George Street to the Wellmeadow with a parade led by Drum Major Alistair Walker of the Atholl Highlanders.
In Crieff, MacRosty Park where people gathered to celebrate the end of the war – was the venue to mark the anniversary.
The Fly Right Dance Company were at the 1940s-themed tea dance demonstrating and guiding people through the dances of the era such as the Lindy Hop and the Jitterbug.
Another conflict was also remembered in Perth on Saturday when The Black Watch Castle and Museum held a special service to honour more than 300 men of the regiment who were killed at the Battle of Aubers Ridge in the First World War.
One hundred years to the day, crosses for every man who was killed were placed on The Black Watch Memorial Wall.
