Raith Rovers now the best of British at home

It is a remarkable statistic but Raith are now the only team in Scottish and English league football not to have conceded at home this season.

Ray McKinnon’s side kept another clean sheet, the fourth of the current campaign, at Stark’s Park on Saturday with a 1-0 win over Dumbarton, a result that has left them sitting third in the Championship table just behind Falkirk on goal difference.

Their goal against the Sons was scored by centre-half Lewis Toshney and the manager has paid tribute to his contribution as well as that of his defensive partner Kyle Benedictus who has netted three times so far.

The latter was released by Dundee at the end of last season while former Scotland Under-21 star Toshney had an unsuccessful spell with Ross County after leaving Celtic and ended last season playing for Cowdenbeath.

Both may have points to prove but McKinnon, who has been linked with the Dundee United manager’s job, insists they don’t have to do that for him.

He said: “The boys had really put in a big shift for the full 90 minutes against Celtic in midweek and it had taken a toll physically.

“Saturday was also a bit of an anti-climax for them mentally so I was delighted that they managed to dig out a result.

“To be fair, our goalie Kevin Cuthbert didn’t have a save to make but it was a deserved three points at home with the bonus of another clean sheet.

“I was also delighted for Tosher to get his first goal for the club.

“Him and Kyle now have a wee competition going to see who can score the most but defensively they have been fantastic.

“They have formed a great partnership.

“They might feel they have a point or two to prove but they have nothing to prove to me.

“They are both only 23 but they have bags of experience and if they can stay fit, there is nothing stopping them having really good careers.

“Overall, I couldn’t really have asked for a better start to the season.”

Meanwhile, Iain Davidson faces a race against time to be fit for Saturday’s game against Morton with the midfielder having to miss the Dumbarton game with a calf strain.
