Dundee United new signing Callum Morris has hailed his Tannadice switch as “a great move for me”.

The Tangerines’ interest in the out-of-contract Dunfermline central defender was first revealed by Courier Sport three months ago.

United confirmed they have snapped up the 24-year-old, who made 37 appearances for the Pars last season, on a two-year deal.

Morris is English-born and started his career at Newcastle United but he is a former Republic of Ireland under-21 international.

The 6ft 3in stopper is excited about his promotion from League One last season to top-flight football with the Tangerines when the new campaign starts.

He said: “After speaking to the manager I was set on joining United. This is a great club which showed last season that it is capable of producing one of the best teams in Scotland and I want to play my part in improving them further.

“Dunfermline were great for my career and I now want to continue my progress, and coming to Tannadice is a great move for me.

“There are many talented footballers here and I am looking forward to playing alongside them. I want to step up and test myself at a higher level and it was a no-brainer really.”

It was back in March that The Courier first mentioned United’s interest in Morris.

Aberdeen and Partick Thistle were also keeping an eye on him after he knocked back the offer of a new deal from East End Park boss Jim Jefferies.

United gaffer Jackie McNamara has finally welcomed him to Tannadice, saying: “We have been after a commanding centre-half and once Callum became available I acted quickly to bring him here.

“He is strong, aggressive and the right age for us. Despite interest from other Scottish Premiership clubs, Callum wanted to come to Dundee United and he will be an excellent addition to our team.

“I am delighted to have signed him.”
