Dundee United manager Peter Houston has left Tannadice.
The plan had been for the United boss to move on at the end of the season, but his departure has been brought forward.
Chairman Stephen Thompson and Houston himself have yet to explain the reason for the decision but it is understood the Tangerines are closing in on a successor.
Falkirk’s Steven Pressley and Partick Thistle’s Jackie McNamara are the frontrunners, along with Derek McInnes and Billy Dodds.
A club statement read: “Dundee United today announced that manager Peter Houston had left the club by mutual consent.
“Peter, who recently confirmed he would not be renewing his contract at the club, led Dundee United to Scottish Cup success in 2010 and helped the squad qualify for European football on three consecutive occasions.
“He leaves with the thanks of everyone at the club and best wishes for the future.”
