St Johnstone have emerged as favourites to sign Brechin City striker Rory McAllister.
Courier Sport can reveal that talks between the Perth club and the much sought-after frontman are at an advanced stage.
It will be a major coup for Saints if they can complete the deal, as Aberdeen and Port Vale have both made offers to the 24-year-old, and a host of other sides have shown an interest.
McAllister has scored 54 goals over the last two seasons with the Glebe Park part-timers, two of them against Saints when the teams met in the Scottish Cup quarter-final.
He was named the Irn Bru second division player of the year, and he had previously been chosen as the Professional Footballers’ Association (PFA) winner.
Since he left Inverness Caley Thistle he has trained as a plumber, and Brechin boss Jim Weir hoped he might stay with them while he completed his apprenticeship.
However, it would appear the lure of another crack at full-time football has proved too strong.
McInnes has signed one new striker this summer Sean Higgins from Dundee as he freshens up a squad that struggled for goals last term.
