An Angus MP has revealed he fears how his autistic daughter will cope with life following his death.
Mike Weir said his daughter, who is in her 20s, has autism and associated learning and communication difficulties.
At a House of Commons debate he encouraged people to learn more about autism and understand what might be behind a child’s apparent bad behaviour – after noting how some parents are subject to comments and criticism from others in public.
Mr Weir later disclosed his fears about what will happen when he is no longer around to care for his daughter and expressed concern over the housing available to those who cannot live an independent life – calling on local authorities to consider it as a “growing problem”.
He also discussed his daughter’s love of cartoons and the issues they pose for them both.
Mr Weir told the House: “She still loves her cartoons, and indeed Thomas the Tank Engine – which she watches on video so she can pause, rewind and watch repeatedly small sections that particularly appeal to her.
“Frankly, after 20 years of this I could cheerfully strangle the Fat Controller!”
