An Angus film company is making its own alien invasion movie inspired by classic 80s sci-fi films and the Netflix series Stranger Things.
Ironstar Films, staffed by former Arbroath Academy and Arbroath High pupils, aims to raise £4,000 to make the short movie “Tellurian” through their IndieGoGo campaign.
Tellurian is a tale of the enduring human spirit in the wake of an alien invasion where all the children on earth disappear.
While the war for the planet rages on a small group of militia find themselves trying to protect possibly the last child on earth.
Graeme Carr, Peter Birnie, Dean Pearson and Allan Jennings are the minds behind Ironstar Films and Tellurian is inspired by their love of ’80s action sci-fi movies along with the aesthetic of recent shows such as Stranger Things.
The Tellurian project is a proof of concept piece which will be used to raise further funds or gain interest in taking the project forwards towards a feature length version or a series.
Ironstar’s story began in June 2014 with an idea to make a short film called Bloodloss which went on to be selected to play in festivals in Australia, Spain, Canada and the US.
Graeme said: “We are based in Arbroath and have been on a journey towards making our first feature film.
“In the last two years we have made five short films in the Angus and Tayside area and each one provided us with valuable experience and brings us one step closer to our goal.
“Our short films have played at approximately 30 festivals worldwide. We have won awards and been highly commended.
“We have had one short film open the DCA’S Dundead film festival and it was also picked up and shown on US television.”
Graeme said Tellurian will feature cast and crew from all over Scotland including Arbroath, Dundee, Glasgow and Edinburgh.
Ironstar have brought on board Craig McGinlay who will star in the Guy Ritchie blockbuster King Arthur which is due for release in 2017.
Craig will also appear next year in TV show Knightfall which was produced by Bourne Legacy and The Hurt Locker actor Jeremy Renner.
Graeme added: “The film industry in Scotland is virtually non-existent and it falls to part-time filmmakers who are doing these projects without pay and on a microbudget to give our talented and creative people a chance at what they want to do.
“This is in the hope that they will move onto bigger things and why we need a little help getting our project out to the local community.
“We are looking to raise around £4,000 and with all our fundraising so far we are close to 50% but we need a little help to reach more interested people.
“The characters are strong individuals from our leading man Craig McGinlay as Mike Walsh to our very own Ellen Ripley in the form of Kerry Browne as Breaker.
“Chris O’Mara and Stephen Humpage portray brother in arms Jack and Mole in our homage to buddy cop movies of the era.”
The £4,000 will include £1,250 for a custom built space pod by local artist Steve Wild and £1,000 on securing locations such as a Cold War era nuclear bunker.
