A decision on whether schools in Angus will open on Monday will be made on Sunday.

The decision date emerged as the council’s chief executive Margo Williamson said she was “hugely grateful” to council staff, working in partnership with others in Angus, that have been working hard to keep services running.

She said the council’s resilience planning has been robust and was working well during the snow chaos of the past few days.

She said: “That work, combined with the great efforts of individuals and groups across the county, is ensuring that our communities and residents are being well supported.

“The weather forecast is for more of the same over the weekend, although temperatures may rise a little. Hopefully we will soon see the return of business as usual for all of our services.

“I am grateful to residents for their understanding and appreciation of the extensive efforts being made by our teams to maintain services, including waste collections. Some bins have not been collected but only where safety concerns made it impossible.

“Some staff have volunteered to assist with out of hours services and in almost all cases we have managed to deliver hot meals and home care to those who need them.

“It’s down to our roads team that these essential services can continue.”

A council spokesperson reminded drivers to take care, saying: “The road conditions are still very difficult across Angus and we urge those who have to travel to continue to take extra care, no matter what type of vehicle they are driving.

“Drifting snow continues to affect most of our roads, creating conditions that even our most experienced gritter crews have found difficult to cope with.

“All available equipment and people are being deployed but we can’t be everywhere and must prioritise our resources to keep main routes as clear as possible.  Details of our gritting priority routes are available at www.angus.gov.uk

“We will continue to keep people informed and respond to their queries where we can. Please follow us on Twitter and Facebook for updates.”

The council will take a decision late Sunday afternoon, about the operation of schools closures on Monday.
