Dundee businessman’s frosty response to vehicle hire firm whose van ‘fly-tipped’ two fridge freezers at his premises

A Dundee businessman has delivered a frosty response to a national vehicle hire firm whose van ‘fly-tipped’ two fridge freezers on his doorstep.

Graham Burns tried to keep his cool after after a van emblazoned with the Enterprise Rent-A-Car logo dumped them at his premises last Thursday.

The Enterprise van captured entering the Broughty Ferry Road site on Thursday.

CCTV footage captured a silver Transit van entering a shared courtyard space on Broughty Ferry Road at around 10.15am before the white goods were left.

Graham – who runs a waste removal business himself – checked with other premises at the Stannergate site before it was verified they had been disposed of during the van’s visit.

‘They were bold about it’

He said: “I genuinely thought when they came in they were connected to one of the other businesses because they were that bold about it.

“It wasn’t until I came back and saw the fridge freezers sitting there that I went and asked if anyone knew about the white goods.

White goods returned.

“No one was expecting a delivery. Just to double-check I phoned the businesses that weren’t open and it was confirmed no one was waiting on these fridge freezers arriving.

“They were disgusting as well, one of them had blood in it from meat packaging.”

After verifying it was an Enterprise van on CCTV, Graham hoped the matter could be cleared up by visiting the vehicle hire premises on the Seagate.

‘How do you know it’s our vehicle?’

The 58-year-old added: “I went away down there to see if they could provide me with contact information for who was in possession of the van.

“I showed them the picture of the van emblazed with the logo and they asked me ‘how do you know it’s our vehicle?’

“To put it mildly I was dumbfounded when they asked me how I knew it was their van after showing them the picture with Enterprise all over it.

“They said to me it was a police incident and I tried to phone the Enterprise offices in Glasgow and Liverpool and they also advised it was a police matter.

“All I wanted was an easy resolution and if they contacted the person responsible to uplift it that would be the end of the matter.

“I explained if they didn’t do that I would be returning them (the fridges) to the Seagate office.

“They told me ‘I wouldn’t be doing that’ but I said ‘watch us’.”

With a resolution appearing miles away, Graham returned the items on Friday morning – with a message for the vehicle hire firm.

He said: “We felt we were left with no other option but to return them to Enterprise and they could deal with their client directly who dumped them.

“The fridges were left outside the premises on the Seagate and we placed notes on them saying ‘please return to Enterprise van hire’ and ‘do not hire for fly-tipping’.

“We haven’t heard anything since from the Seagate office regarding the matter.”

Enterprise Rent-A-Car have been approached for comment.
