Men ‘tried to lure Dundee women into car’ trial hears

Three men tried to lure a string of young girls and women into their car before leading police on a 90mph chase, a trial heard today.

Miguel Cover, Christopher Stevens and Michael Sandford, all from London, are accused of driving around Dundee in a Ford Galaxy trying to entice the females, one a teenager, into the motor.

The trio are also accused of asking to join in sex acts with one and accusing another two of being racist towards them.

Dundee Sheriff Court today heard that after these alleged incidents, the details of their car were circulated by officers, who found them on Riverside Drive.

That, it’s claimed, began a high-speed chase down the A90 towards Perth which culminated in the car carrying the trio attempting to take a 90-degree bend at 90mph, causing the car to skid and smash into a barrier. The driver is then alleged to have run off towards Perth.

One of the alleged victims of the trio told the trial that she had been walking home alone around 10.30pm on January 9 when the men approached her on East Marketgait in the car with blacked-out windows.

She said: “They pulled over and said they were asking for directions.

“The front-seat passenger was speaking to me. I was on the phone to my friend and he asked if I had a boyfriend.

“I said, ‘Does it look like I have a boyfriend? I have a girlfriend’.

“After that there was a lot of ‘wooing’ coming from the car I don’t know how to describe it.

“Then they asked if they could join in with me. I said no and walked away then I phone the police because I was worried what could happen to someone else.”

Traffic officer PC Michael Fullerton, 50, said he and colleagues had been asked to trace the trio’s car in the city’s Hilltown area. Police finally caught up with the car at St Madoes, 15 miles away. PC Fullerton said: “We wanted to do a tactical containment of the vehicle, there were three police cars and we wanted to get one ahead, one beside and one behind to stop it.

“The car was travelling at around 90mph and at Kinfauns it tried to take the junction, a slip road that is almost a 90-degree angle. They were doing 90mph and lost control, skidded across some grass and collided with a barrier.

“The driver got out and made off westwards on foot, and the front seat passenger also got out and was detained.

“There was a third man who stayed in the car and was also detained.”

Cover, 32, Stevens, 23, and Sandford, 25, each deny five charges of behaving in a threatening and abusive manner likely to cause fear or alarm.

Cover further denies two charges of dangerous driving as well as charges of failing to stop when ordered to do so, leaving the scene of an accident and failing to report an accident.

The trial, before Sheriff George Way and a jury, continues.
