Golf clubs across Tayside and Fife say they may call for police intervention to stop irresponsible golfers who are continuing to defy the coronavirus lockdown.

Clubs across the region have been closed since March 24, on the instruction of the Scottish Government and Scottish Golf as part of the efforts to stop the spread of the virus.

But despite the ban golfers have been seen on several courses in recent days ignoring the lockdown restrictions which request people only take exercise close to home.

Glenrothes Golf Club

Glenrothes Golf Club as reiterated its request to the public to heed the official advice after players were spotted on its course this week.

A spokesman for the club’s management committee said: “It is with deep regret that we have been informed that people are defying these instructions and not only defying these instructions but hacking up the golf course in areas.

“These rules must be observed, we will back Fife Golf Trust 100% on any action they wish to take that they deem necessary.

“The Police also have the authority to issue fines, and although I am sure people will agree they have enough to contend with at the moment.”

Other clubs have also warned the public to stay away.

In a statement, Kirkcaldy Golf Club, said: “Unfortunately we are finding an increased amount of visitors to the golf course at the moment.

“To be clear, the Clubhouse, Practice Facilities and Golf Course are closed until further notice.

“Kirkcaldy Golf Club are liaising with Police Scotland to monitor the situation and will fully back any action taken upon those found ignoring the rules. Member or not.”

North Inch Golf Course in Perth, which closed last month, has taken the added precaution of removing flags and filling in holes to prevent people still playing.

A spokesperson for Scottish Golf, confirmed the need for golfers to follow government guidelines and stay off the courses.

said: “While golf is an outdoor sport that allows players to exercise in the fresh air, the message to all of us is clear, we must stay at home and play our part in containing the spread of COVID-19.

“With this in mind Scottish Golf asked all golfers in Scotland to refrain golfing until further notice.

“We understand that the advice will have a significant impact on golf clubs across the country and we will continue to consult with our industry partners to provide clubs with all the information and support necessary in this time of deep uncertainty.”
