Police resume search for man in River Tay

Firefighters search the River Tay, Perth, on Saturday.
Firefighters search the River Tay, Perth, on Saturday.

Police returned to the River Tay in Perth to search for a man last seen entering the icy water at the weekend.

A specialist police dive and marine unit focused on Moncreiffe Island on  Monday, with additional help provided by police air and operational support units.

This followed a multi-agency search of the river after a man earlier seen on the Queens Bridge, entered the water at 4am.

The extensive operation on Saturday involved staff from Police Scotland, the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service, the coastguard, the RNLI from Broughty Ferry, the Scottish Ambulance Service and a helicopter from Prestwick.

Emergency services probed a large area of the River Tay, including a stretch of water at lower Friarton and also near Inchyra, but their efforts were to no avail.

On Monday, a spokesperson for Police Scotland confirmed officers in Perth continued to carry out “extensive searches” of the River Tay.

Chief Inspector Maggie Pettigrew, area commander for Perth and Kinross for Police Scotland, added : ‘We carried out extensive multi-agency searches over the weekend and today our dive and marine unit will be carrying out searches near to Moncreiffe Island.”

Moncreiffe Island divides the River Tay into two channels as it flows through Perth.

A police van and lorry was parked in Tay Street, Perth, on Monday, with divers scouring the river and surrounding embankments.

The River Tay had swollen overnight following heavy rain in Perth but conditions improved during Monday to allow police officers to resume the search for the man.

No details regarding the male have been released by police.
