Blether: Dundee’s Duncan Lambie excelled in the company of Milan and Cologne

Definitely a fans’ favourite during his time at Dens Park was Duncan Lambie.

Duncan was signed after impressing in a trial game – a match he was offered after impressing against the Dens men’s second string the previous week.

The circumstances behind his signing for the Dark Blues are revealed in a March 1971 cutting, which read:

Dundee have signed a trialist who scored two goals for them against Aberdeen reserves last night.

He is Duncan Lambie, of Armadale Thistle.

He played a trial for Rangers last week – against Dundee at Dens Park, and was due at Ibrox on Thursday night for signing talks.

A host of clubs were keen to sign the 18-year-old forward.

He was a provisional signing for Hibs for one season but was released last season without being called up.

He was the boot boy at Brockville when John Prentice was manager there but was released when Willie Cunningham took over.

His older brother John plays full-back for St Johnstone.

Duncan is to go full-time with Dundee.

The winger played a great part in Dundee’s Uefa Cup run in season 1971-72.

Incredibly, this particular Euro venture would also bring opposition in the shape of Cologne and AC Milan, two of the sides Dundee met in their run to the European Cup semi-finals in 1962-63.

Cologne were beaten on aggregate but the Dens men went out to Milan, who won the first leg 3-0.

Dundee won the second leg 2-0, with Lambie’s display described thus: “Another to impress was pacey winger Duncan Lambie, signed from Armadale Thistle earlier in the year.

“The former Falkirk boot boy emerged as a player who revelled in the big match atmosphere and his direct running had given Milan all sorts of problems.”

Leaving Dens after four years, he signed for St Johnstone, then had a spell with SpVgg Greuther Furth, a German football club in Furth, Bavaria.

Returning to Scotland, he then joined Hibs for two seasons.

n EACH week, BwB gives a sample from the Readers’ Queries file in the old Sporting Post.
