Dundee give 14-year-old George Johnston U20s debut against Celtic

Dundee became the latest club to hand a teenage protege a Development League debut when they faced Celtic last night.

Highly-rated left-winger George Johnston, just 14, got the first 45 minutes of the 1-0 Links Park defeat.

Last week, the Hoops hit the headlines when they gave 13-year-old sensation Karamoko Dembele nine minutes of a second-string clash with Hearts.

For the Dark Blues, it’s a case of if you’re good enough, you’re old enough, and schoolboy Johnston made their line-up on merit.

They are mindful of his tender years, however, which is why he was only given 45 minutes’ action.

In starting his Development League career early — normally players start at that level at 16 — Dundonian Johnston was following in the footsteps of another highly-rated Dens kid.

Craig Wighton, currently away on Scotland U/21 duty, first appeared at that level when he was 15 and still a schoolboy.

Johnston showed up well while he was on the park but could not prevent what was generally a young side going down to a first-half header by Sam Wardrop.

Celtic did finish the game with only 10 men after Brandon Payne was send packing in the dying minutes.

He was shown a straight red for a lunge at home midfielder Calvin Colquhoun.

Next up for the U/20s is a trip to Ross County.
