Art Angel classes to help pupils create art school portfolios

Art Angel is an innovative, charitable arts project based in Dundee that is offering a series of art classes to help secondary school pupils build up a portfolio for submission to art schools.

Dundee’s new Art Angel classes will be of benefit to high school pupils building a portfolio for art school application, or for those with a general interest in art and design, and Art Angel has commissioned professional Dundee-based artists to run the sessions.

Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design graduates Anna Orton and Simon Reekie to help raise awareness of its services as well as connecting with the wider community by making its facilities available to others.

The classes run by Anna (25) and Simon (36) will take place in the Art Angel rooms, for seven weeks from February 19.

There will be classes for two age groups, 11 to 14 and 15 to 17, with the students working to develop their own ideas.

At the end of the seven weeks, an exhibition will be held to showcase the work made.

Anna and Simon believe their classes can help compliment the art education young people get in the school curriculum and act as a way of expanding and diversifying their talents.DauntingAnother point of the classes is to help build young people’s confidence in art. Learning to develop a style and trust instincts and judgements can often be a daunting experience.

Art Angel project manager Rosie Summerton said, “We do lot of work with students, providing placements for students of Duncan of Jordanstone and the universities, and we have young people coming from schools as well.

“This helps to get the message across that mental health issues are not weird and wonderful they are actually very common and normal.”

She added, “Simon and Anna are kindly giving a percentage of what they make back to Art Angel, which means this will help us buy materials or run other groups.”

There will also be an Art Angel fund-raising night at the Reading Rooms on February 16, with DJ sets and performances by local bands including My Alice Band and The Dirty Little Secrets.

The seven-week art project begins on February 19. The cost of each class is £7.50 payable in advance for the block with the price including all materials.
