Sentinel Steam Waggon takes Fife back in time

Steam power returned to the roads of Fife when a 1931 lorry was taken on a jaunt by its owners.

The family of Andrew Cook, of Leven, decided to take their Sentinel Steam Waggon on a New Year drive from Leven to Elie.

Zander Cook drove to Elie, where some passengers were given a ride in the back, and brother Alastair took the wheel on the way home.

The waggon was painted in the green livery of Belliston Quarry Co Ltd when the family, which owns Andrew Cook Group, added it to their fleet of vintage vehicles in 2004.

The three-way tipper lorry, built in Shrewsbury, was first owned by the Wrekin Coal Company, in Dawley, but only saw a couple of years’ service there before petrol and diesel engines began to take over.

Thanks to its built-in boiler, however, it took on a new role as a tar sprayer its last place of work being Heathrow Airport in the early 1960s.

According to Zander, the DG4 Sentinel, which has been taken by the Cooks all over Britain and to Ireland, is the last of its kind in the world.
