Tickets for next year’s Commonwealth Games shooting in Angus are among the most sought after for the entire sporting event.

The shooting at Barry Buddon is on a list of seven Glasgow 2014 sports classed as “extremely popular”, meaning the briefs will be difficult to secure.

The deadline to apply for tickets is 6pm on Monday, with all applicants given an equal chance of success through a lottery system.

Alongside shooting, the most applied for events include diving, swimming, mountain biking, track cycling, art gymnastics and triathlon.

Spectators can put their names in the hat for a total of 17 sports competitions as well as the opening and closing ceremonies.

The chairwoman of the Angus steering group for the games, Councillor Jeanette Gaul, said: “I’m delighted to see the huge interest in the shooting discipline.

“We’ve been working hard to make sure that we are ready to welcome the visitors to Angus.

“We are looking forward to meeting the visitors from across the world and sharing our rich cultural heritage with them.

“The athletes can also look forward to a warm welcome from a hugely enthusiastic and knowledgeable audience of both home and travelling supporters of the sport.”

Graeme Dey, MSP for Angus South, encouraged locals not to miss out on the sporting spectacle.

He said: “There are just days to go before the door closes on those wishing to apply for tickets.

“There has been a tremendous appetite for tickets so far and the event is already shaping up to be a wonderful success.

“Some of the world’s greatest athletes will compete in Scotland next summer and if you want the chance of a ringside seat then make sure you apply by 6pm on Monday.”

The application process began on August 19 when up to one million tickets went on offer.

The 11-day games, which begin on July 23 next year, will see 4,500 athletes compete across 14 venues.

Ticket prices start at £15, with half-price tickets for under-16s and over-60s.
